Tropical fruit growers meeting Monday
The next meeting of the West Hawaii chapter of Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the University of Hawaii experiment station in Kainaliu across from Aloha Theatre. Nonmembers are welcome to attend.
Ken Love will discuss the “ABCs of ‘Ultra’ Exotic Tropical Fruit,” covering some of the island’s most unusual fruit.
Members are encouraged to bring fruit for sharing.

Chamber invites businesses to auction
West Hawaii businesses can market products and services in time for the holidays during the second annual “Bid for Hawaii” auction presented by the Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce.
The auction offers marketing exposure that can drive bidders to each participating company’s website. During last year’s inaugural auction, the event’s website attracted 851 unique hits with 111 placing bids from Hawaii, the U.S. mainland and Canada. The auction runs Nov. 26 to midnight Dec. 10, and new items for bid are offered each day.

Underwater photos with Santa offered
Free underwater photographs with Santa Claus will be taken from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 4 at Jack’s Diving Locker’s scuba pool. The program is for divers, snorkelers or swimmers — adults or children. Children must be accompanied by parents.

Renovated island golf course opens Nov. 20
Golfers and friends of the Big Island Country Club are invited to the grand reopening event from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 20 at the course. The event marks the official debut of the club following more than $1 million in renovations to the 18-hole course by the new owner, Silagi Development and Management, a California-based commercial real estate development company.
The event is being held in conjunction with a fundraiser for the Puuanahulu Community Association, with green fees that day being donated to the association’s student scholarship fund community activities. The course is located adjacent to the community of Puuanahulu on Highway 190 between Kona and Waimea.
Activities at the course Nov. 20 include regular golf play for prizes, such as closest to the pin on par 3s, longest drive and straightest drive, along with a variety of range games. There will also be prize drawings, golf club fitting and repair and food for sale.
The Hawaii Wildlife Center in Kohala, which has partnered with the country club to provide a sanctuary for the endangered Hawaiian goose, or nene, will also be at the event with information the nene and other native birds at the course.
The course was designed by golf architect Perry Dye and opened in 1997. Dye has been supervising the renovation. For the golfer, the course has all the attributes of a traditional Dye design: wide fairways, bent grass greens and water — which comes into play on nine holes — with the signature par-3, 17th hole featuring an island green. The course plays more than 7,000 yards for the better player but just 4,850 yards from the forward tees. Par is 72.
